When does the 2026-27 Maine high school basketball season start?
Class S teams can play countable games from Fri Nov 27, 2026; Classes A, B, C and D from Thu Dec 3, 2026. State finals are Feb 26-27, 2027.
What are the basketball classes in Maine?
Five classes for the 2025-27 cycle: A (670 or more students), B (450 to 669), C (225 to 449), D (100 to 224) and S (fewer than 100). Each class has a North and a South region. Class AA no longer exists.
How many Maine high school basketball teams are there?
For 2026-27, 129 boys teams and 129 girls teams across ten class-and-region groups.
What are Heal points?
Maine's formula for ranking teams for the tournament. Each win earns points by the loser's class (A 40, B 38, C 36, D 34, S 32), divided by games on the schedule; that's the preliminary index. The tournament index adds up the preliminary indexes of the teams you beat, divides by games on the schedule and multiplies by 10.
How many teams make the tournament in each region?
Two-thirds of the region, rounded up, and every bracket is filled to eight. A region with fewer than eight teams sends everyone.
Why can a team with a worse record have more Heal points?
Because who you beat matters. Wins over higher classes are worth more points, and the tournament index rewards beating teams that win a lot.
Does a loss lower Heal points?
Not directly: losses add no points. But the divisor is the full schedule, so a loss is a game that could have added points and didn't.
Do games against out-of-state or non-MPA teams count?
Only countable games on an MPA member school's schedule count toward Heal points. If you're unsure about a specific game, the MPA's posted standings are the official answer.
Is niftiIQ the official source?
No. The Maine Principals' Association (MPA) keeps the official Heal point standings. niftiIQ recomputes standings from public results, explains them and adds its own estimates. We're not affiliated with the MPA.
Does niftiIQ show players?
No. High school pages are teams and schools only, never individual students.
